Bangladesh Embassy Washington DC: what to check before you apply

The embassy in Washington DC is the senior Bangladeshi mission in the United States. For a large part of the country it is also the only option for passport and consular work, and for some services it is the only mission that handles them at all.

The short answer

• Washington DC is the embassy; New York and Los Angeles are consulates general. All three do consular work, but they cover different states and publish their own instructions.
• Confirm that DC is your mission before you post anything. Consular jurisdiction is assigned by state and each mission publishes the list it covers. A file sent to the wrong mission comes back.
• The current fee schedule is published by the embassy — check it before you send payment, as it changes. So does the accepted payment method and the exact payee name.
• Ask up front whether your application needs an in-person appointment or can be handled by post.

What the embassy handles

In broad terms: e-passport applications and renewals, NVR endorsements, visas, and the document work that only a mission can do — attestation and legalisation of documents, powers of attorney, and citizenship-related paperwork.

The practical point for planning is that document legalisation and passport work are different queues with different requirements, even when you are posting them to the same building. If you are doing both on one trip or in one envelope, ask explicitly whether that is acceptable, because bundling mismatched services is a common reason a package is returned intact.

Before you prepare anything

Four questions, asked in this order, will save you most of the avoidable delay:

1. Is DC my mission? Check the embassy’s jurisdiction list against the state on your driver’s licence or state ID, not against where you were born or where your family lives.
2. What is the current fee, and how must it be paid? Missions frequently do not take cards or personal cheques. See paying mission fees.
3. Post or in person? An e-passport involves biometric enrolment, which may require you to appear. Ask before you build a timeline.
4. What exactly goes in the envelope? Get the embassy’s own checklist and work from that document, not from a summary of it.

Preparing the file itself

Whatever service you are applying for, the same discipline applies. Your name, date of birth and parents’ names should read identically across every document you submit. Where they do not — a middle name that appears on one record and not another, a transliteration that shifted between a birth certificate and a passport — deal with the discrepancy openly and include whatever evidence reconciles it. Applications are not usually refused over these; they are referred back, which costs weeks.

Photographs are their own failure mode. The specification is unforgiving about background, head size and expression, and a high-street photo taken for a US passport is not automatically acceptable. See the photo specification.

Timelines and travel

Do not book non-refundable travel against an application that has not been returned to you. Processing involves both the mission and the passport authority in Bangladesh, and a file that needs correction takes materially longer than a clean one.
