Bangladesh Consulate General Los Angeles: applying from the West

For most applicants in the western United States, the defining problem is not the paperwork. It is the distance. If your mission is a flight away rather than a drive, every avoidable error turns into a second trip, and the whole preparation strategy has to change.

The short answer

• Los Angeles is a consulate general. It covers a defined set of states — confirm yours is on its list before you plan anything.
• Find out what can be done by post and what requires you to appear, and ask that question first, before you fill in a single form.
• The current fee schedule is published by the consulate — check it before you send payment, as it changes, and confirm the accepted payment method and the exact payee name.
• If you must attend in person, do everything possible to make it a single visit: complete file, correct photographs, correct payment.

Distance changes the order of operations

At a mission you can reach on a bus, you can afford to learn by iteration. At one you have to fly to, you cannot. So the sequence is different:

1. Confirm jurisdiction. Match the state on your government ID against the consulate’s published list.
2. Establish the channel. Post or in person? For which parts? An e-passport involves biometric enrolment, which may or may not require you to appear.
3. Ask about alternatives to travelling. Whether outreach sessions, mobile consular arrangements or any postal route exist for your service is something only the consulate can tell you. We do not know what is currently on offer and will not guess.
4. Only then prepare the file.

Making one visit count

If you are going to appear in person, treat the trip as a single shot.

• Photographs. Have them taken to the Bangladeshi specification before you travel, and bring spares. Read the photo specification first — a set taken for a US passport is not automatically acceptable.
• Payment. Cards and personal cheques are frequently not accepted at missions. A money order in the right amount, made out to the exact payee, is the safe assumption until the consulate tells you otherwise. See paying mission fees.
• Documents and copies. Bring the originals and more photocopies than you think you need. Copy shops near a consulate are not a plan.
• Consistency. Names, dates and parents’ names must read the same across every document. If they do not, bring what reconciles them — otherwise the file is referred back and you are managing it from two thousand miles away.

Which application are you making?

If you hold a Bangladeshi passport, you are renewing: see e-passport renewal from the USA. Posting an application

If your service can be handled by post, two things are worth doing regardless of what is required: use a trackable service, and keep a complete copy of everything you sent. A passport in transit is the most valuable envelope most people will ever mail, and the ability to say precisely what was in it, and when it was delivered, is what makes a follow-up call productive.

What we could not verify

• The consulate’s street address, postal address, telephone numbers and email addresses.
• The exact list of states in its consular jurisdiction.
• Current fee amounts, the exact payee name and accepted payment methods.
• Which services can be completed by post and which require attendance.
• Whether outreach or mobile consular sessions are currently offered, and where.
• Appointment arrangements, opening hours and current processing times.

The consulate publishes this. Given what a wasted trip costs from the West, confirm it directly before you book anything.
